Ward Sylvester, Bobby's manager, on "Getting Together": "David Cassidy didn't much like the idea of the spinoff. The first day on the set, I heard David on the phone to his agent complaining about it. It was an uncomfortable situation.
"'How could you have allowed this to happen?' David was saying. 'This isn't a "Partridge Family" episode at all. It's a pilot, and I don't have anything to do. I don't understand why, on the show I'm starring in, all of a sudden Bobby Sherman has more to do than I do...'
"From his point of view, who wouldn't feel that way? To assuage David, Screen Gems gave him a share in the profits of 'Getting Together,' and the news appeared in the press."

Wasn't this season 1 of PF? A 19-20 year old kid had the savvy to make that kind of phonecall? This doesn't sound true. I can certainly see a more seasoned DC doing this-but this would have been before he even reached the height of his fame.

I'm pretty sure this is true. What's so hard to believe? I know for a fact that David had a piece of the series, even though it wasn't very successful.

I can see DC making that phone call to vent to his manager about an annoying situation. But there were lots of episodes that didn't give DC much to do (even in season one), so maybe this was part of a broader issue of DC not feeling challanged as an actor. He doesn't strike me as a guy who has suffers in silence... Wink

I guess I can't imagine a kid that age being that savvy! Do I think he'd complain? Sure! SO maybe I need to amend what I said. I believe he'd complain, it just seems odd to me-given he was not even at the peak of his fame-that he'd have that clout.

Well, this was the end of the first season. I think his star was pretty much in orbit at this point. He had already renegotiated his contract, too so I'm inclined to believe Bobby Sherman's account of the week. It may be interesting to ask BS about it further, too. . . .

I guess I don't see the part of this account that requires savvy on DC's part. This account just has DC complaining about "his" show being used as a pilot for another show, and his screen time being reduced to make room for Sherman. It doesn't say that DC demanded that he be given a share of GT's profits...it just says that he made a stink about the situation, and a share of the profits was offered to appease him.

To me, it sounds exactly like the kind of thing that producers offer to unhappy stars, especially back in the day when stars actually believed that being given a percentage of net profits meant something. DC could be given a 50% percentage of net profits and get a check for $.02, since every conceivable (and inconceivable) expense related to the enterprise would get paid before DC got his check. (I'm assuming that they offered him a net profit deal, because that's the deal they gave him for PF).

Remember the stink Lee Majors made when they tried to spin-off "The Bionic Boy" with Vincent Van Patten?? He was worried that his own series would be affected because the bionic franchise was going to be spread too thin with THREE bionic series running at the same time. He managed to get that one squashed. I'm not sure "savvy" is the right word. I think the right word is "panic". Laughing

If I sent you the pieces of green paper in my purse, you'd get a stack of crumpled taxi and parking lot receipts, one business card, and a grocery list written on the back of a X-mas card envelope. Smile
