My dumb I-don't-understand-how-TV-works questions of the week:
I know the bus has been discussed at length, but I still don't understand how some of the filming was done.
For example, in at least one episode, it looks as though there is the silhouette of a microphone on the windshield of the bus. Is that possible?
Also, in the scene where DC is driving and talking to Meredith Baxter, who is sitting behind him, it looks as though the scene had to filmed without a windshield in the bus. You don't see it.
And in some scenes of the bus being filmed, as when they're driving at night, it looks as though it's just one of those vehicle scenes typically filmed inside with a phony outside. Is that possible?
Also, a general sound question--did they film the scenes with someone holding a long pole with a microphone at the end--is it still done that way? Then how do they do outside scenes from afar, like in the opening of "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Partridge" (my favorite episode), when Keith and Danny are walking along outside?
Incidentally, Meredith Baxter is so beautiful and has such a serene wisdom about her at such a young age. Just had to add that.

There was no "set" built for the bus interior. All of the scenes you see were actually filmed on the bus. Lights were rigged inside (in some shots you can see a row of plugs above the windows along the sides) which were run on batteries. A battery pack was installed underneath the bus so they could run the lights, etc., on batteries while filming. Brian tells a fun story of his shoes melting against the hot lights in our interview with him in the People and Places section.

The did use the boom microphones, which are either hand held and moved along with the action, or on long poles that swivel. Very Happy
