When We’re Singin’ – The Partridge Family & Their Music is a new book by Johnny Ray Miller that tells the story of the music behind the famous 1970’s television band for the very first time. It’s scheduled for release on December 9, 2016.
The Partridge Family, which aired in primetime on ABC from 1970-1974 made David Cassidy an international, record-breaking superstar. The story of the music behind the image of The Partridge Family has never been told. Miller has put together 5 years of research to commemorate the chart-topping albums and singles that took America by storm in 1970. “I Think I Love You” alone was the fastest selling single of 1970.
Miller began his interview process with Shirley Jones, star of The Partridge Family and best known for her starring roles in feature films including “Oklahoma,” “The Music Man” and “Carousel.”
Miller’s background in the theatre provided opportunities to work with David Cassidy in a record-breaking concert performance around the time the research for the book began. David Cassidy supports the project, and has written a foreword for the book—a first for Cassidy.
Over 100 total interviews were conducted, including the cast, producers, songwriters, musicians and Bell Records staff, many of which have never been interviewed on the subject matter. The final in-depth interviews from cast members Dave Madden and Suzanne Crough, who have since passed away, are also revealed in When We’re Singin’. Dozens of songwriters were interviewed, including Paul Anka, Rupert Holmes, L. Russell Brown, Terry Cashman, Tommy West, Bobby Hart, Danny Janssen, and many others.
Music historian, author and musician Ken Sharp contributed never-before-published interviews from the late great Wes Farrell (songwriter and Partridge Family Music Producer) and Tony Romeo (Songwriter, “I Think I Love You”), both revealed in this new biography for the very first time.
“When We’re Singin’ – The Partridge Family and Their Music,” won a $27,000 Kickstarter campaign in 2015, funded by the fans in support of the book’s publication. The Kickstarter campaign was funded by over 240 individuals including the show’s Executive Producer Bob Claver, Bell Records VP Beverly Weinstein (Partridge Family record label), songwriter Harriet Schock, and filmmaker Denny Tedesco (The Wrecking Crew). It was also funded by the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Library and Archives, where much of the research was conducted.
Consequently, When We’re Singin’ resulted in a 568 page hard back book with a 64-page, full color photo section. The accomplishment is one of a kind, and something that no other TV show/band can claim.
“When We’re Singin’ – The Partridge Family and Their Music,” is available for pre-purchase at the website, WhenWereSingin.com. The pre-sale cost is $29.99 reduced from $39.99.
