Looking at the examples of the Osmonds, the Jackson 5, and the Cowsills, on which The Partridge Family was based, it seems they were lacking one crucial element: an abusive father to drive the kids to perfection.

It would be an interesting subject to know, when the series writers visited the Cowsills, were they so unfavorably impressed with Mr. Cowsill they gave up any ideas they might have entertained of portraying Mr. Partridge?

That's a strange question. How may abusive parents rear children who are NOT a band? Meaning, siblings don't have to be in the biz to experience some of the growing pains we all have faced in some way or another....

Mr. Osmond was abusive? Shocked

I don't think Mr. Osmond could be characterized as abusive.

From all I have heard they are a very loving family.

A very strict Mormon upbringing maybe, but not abusive.
There is a difference between discipline and abuse.

I was surprised by the question too. I have never heard of the Osmonds' father ever being abusive.

Some of Mr. Osmond's children, generally older ones, have made allegations while others, generally younger, characterized him as just a good disciplinarian. Perhaps it depends on who you believe, or his style of dealing with his children mellowed with age.

They were very disciplined- they had the reputation of being "one-take" Osmonds, & their father wanted to maintain that image. Which probably led to Donny's problems in later years.

I don't recall Donny having problems, other than outgrowing the teen idol image.

Marie had postpartum depression but that has nothing to do with parents that I am aware of.

My father was strict with me about doing my best at all times, but that isn't abusive.

What "allegations" are you referring to?
I have been an Osmonds fan for years and
never heard this.
Does the fact that he spanked his children make him a bad father?
I call that discipline NOT abuse.

Yeah -- OK, this is from a UK tabloid. And we all know how reliable they are. Laughing I'll believe it when I see it in print from an Osmond from a more reputable news outlet. So, that leaves out FAUX News. Laughing

Donny did a series of interviews a few years ago (after the Jospeh tour) in which he discussed his struggles with crippling social anxiety. He said that they stem from the expectation that he had to perform perfectly as a kid. But I know nothing about who was expecting that "one take Osmond" perfection.

There is a germ of something in there....all of these kids bands had a very driven parent, the question of abuse aside. You can add the Bee Gees to that list; they were supporting the family as a band when the twins were 10 years old, and their dad Hugh was the manager. The Gibbs fight about everything, but they all agree that their dad was one tough cookie as a parent/manager.

Tough parents are not unique to show business.

My Father always (and still does) pushed me to do my best.

It's just more public when dealing with show business and of course, results are expected sooner if you are a young performer.

Parents who make money off of their children's talent make me sick. If your children want to perform, hire a manager for them and get off to your own job.

Partridge Family wouldn't have existed "as is" in the real world. It's a complete FANTASY. For example, do you really think after a year or two of hit records they would have stayed in that quaint little house in San Pueblo?
