Here's info on the Cowsills fundraiser in which Shirley made an appearance:

It was a fundraiser to help defray the costs of Billy's medical bills. Unfortunately, he has since passed away.

Another link with tons of photos:

Well it was just an introduction and one song (I Really Want To Know You) but that is still absolutely fantastic, all by itself.

As far as I know this is the only time Shirley Jones ever performed a Partridge Family song live on stage. How ironic that it would actually be with the Cowsills, all these years later.

Very cool. I think this is what Oprah would call a "full-circle moment".

Shirley always liked that song, and so have I . It's one of the few PF tunes that might not have been improved by DC's splendid vocals, but I'm still curious how he'd sound singing it.-Lee

Shirley Jones did not, not, NOT sing onstage with the Cowsills. She came out and introduced the song mid way through the show and gave a really nice speech about the Cowsills being the "real deal" and the PF a pale comparison.

Well OK Scott, but once again, this is what I read. More specifically; an article written before the concert, saying that they were planning on performing "I Really Want To Know You" together.

So for some reason they did not follow through with it, which is kind of a shame. But just the fact that she did it was very cool, even if it was just a "half circle moment".

"Punky" on the Cowsills website the song listing from the El Ray concert says the Introduction by Shirley Jones was followed immediately by "I Really Want To Know You".

Right. Shirley came out, spoke to the crowd and introduced the song. It was one of the only (if not THE only) song that both groups recorded. She gave a really nice speech about the Cowsills being the "real deal" and the PF being a pale comparison. She then left the stage as the Cowsills performed the song. Very Happy I've heard this from numerous people that attended the concert.

BTW: I've never heard the Cowsills' original version of the song. How does it compare to the PF version?

Thats true, I just heard from an "inside" source that they had planned to do the number together (hence the song being scheduled right after her intro), but chose not to at the last minute. They said she wasn't feeling well and didn't feel her voice was up to it that evening.

Well it would have been a nice thing to hear Shirley do a PF song live, but either way, she certainly did give the Cowsills their props with that intro.

Scott, I have actually never heard the Cowsills version, but after this thread I think I will go and find it. I will give you my review when I do.

I'm sorry, but your "inside source" (what is this -- Watergate/Deep Throat?? Laughing Laughing Laughing ) is misinformed.

Shirley was never supposed to sing with them. Nor was she ever advertised as doing so. Perhaps when they first asked her to appear, they hoped it would come to be, but that was never the plan once Shirley confirmed her participation. I know for a fact that they never rehearsed the song, so, it seems very unlikely she was planning on going onstage and "winging" a song she hadn't performed in what -- 26 years?? Plus, from what I've been told, The Cowsills version of the song is similar, but different enough from the PF version that rehearsal would have been required. There's just no way this was ever supposed to happen. Very Happy

LOL well Im not making it up if thats what your suggesting. The "source" didn't want their name mentioned on this board, but it's someone who is close to the family and was present at the El Ray room that night. I tend to believe her. Now I can't speak for Shirley Jones or her people, but it appears SOMEBODY on the Cowsills end did plan on singing with her.
Cool

Can we all just agree that it would have been SUPER COOL if it had happened?

Thank you Danny, I agree. From a PF fan perspective, it was kind of was missed opportunity. But again, her very presence there was meaningful.

That doesn't mean that Shirley ever planned to sing with them. That's what Scott's saying.
