I was reading the in-flight magazine on Southwest Airlines this weekend, and there was a feature article on (and interview with) George Barris, the creator of many famous custom (or "Kustom", to use his preferred term) cars of the 1960's and 1970's. The article listed some of the famous cars he'd designed for various television shows, like the Batmobile, the Munsters Koach - and the Partridge Family bus. This was the first I've ever heard of it, and frankly, I didn't believe it, mainly because I recalled the stories of how the bus would always break down, and of course its unfortunate demise - I assumed a George Barris creation would have been better built/restored, and not been left abandoned in a parking lot.
I hunted through the "People and Places" interviews and found no mention of this, and I even searched George Barris' website - nothing. Does anyone have any idea if this is true or not?

To the best of my knowledge, that information is incorrect. I have asked George Barris about the bus, and he's told me he had nothing to do with it. I've also talked with Ross Bellah, the art director at Screen Gems during the 60s and 70s and he told me that a staff designer created the motif for the bus, based on an idea that Bernard Slade (the series' creator) had. Originally, Bernard Slade wanted more of a psychedelic design but the network feared that thought related to drugs. So, they settled on a Mondrian-type design. Very Happy

At his concert last night, DC said of the bus, "That b**ch was a b****rd!"

Yes. He said it had 220,000 miles on it, and Shirley didn't want to drive it.
It all started because an audience member handed him an old picture of him (he said of his photo something like, "Isn't she pretty?") that was taken on the bus.

Shirley said in a TV interview that the Teamsters made her an honorary member for learning to drive it. She didn't look unhappy in the outtakes of her driving.

Funny thing about TV cars is that they are mainly Props. The famous Batmobile, for example, had a remarkably low top speed.

The Kustom Kars were often Show Pieces with questionable driveability. My former boss Ed "Big Daddy" Roth designed and built the famous Beatnik Bandit only to find that he couldn't fit in the car with the snazzy Bubble Top lowered.

After Columbo went off the air, the TV studio told Falk that the his famous car would be taken care of and stored. They in fact sold it off as junk, happily to a fan who took care of it. Falk discovered that his car was MIA when the first TV movie went into production. He was able to track the car down, re-purchased it and also purchased a second (identical) car. Falk personally owns both of them and they are treated like museum pieces. Which I suppose they are. There aren't many of those things on the road. Wink

Very Happy Good for Falk! Ya gotta love that guy. He was great in the Princess Bride and even better in that movie about Angels (Wings of Desire?).

Two years ago, I went to the Palm Springs Film Festival. They were premiereing the movie THE THING ABOUT MY FOLKS Written by & starring Paul Reiser. Peter Falk Played Paul's Father.
After the movie, there was a cocktail party at a party house formerly owned by Frank Sinatra. Peter was "holding court" in Frank's bedroom, & invited me to sit on his lap for the photo. Afterwards, he gave me a kiss on the cheek. He also invited my Dad to pose with him (my dad had one condition--no kiss-- to which Peter replied "Nahh I don't kiss rough cheeks!") We ran into Paul Reiser there too & got autographs & pics, (my mom didn't want to pose next to a portrait of Frank Sinatra on the wall, cause she liked men with life in 'em, & Paul said "I'm alive-- will I do?") & my mom kept running into Lance Bass, but she didn't know who he was.
