Who'd a thunk. Good for him, but I'm not loving his cover of Unchained Melody.

Katie Hasty, N.Y.
For the first time in nearly 29 years, Barry Manilow tops The Billboard 200. "The Greatest Songs of the Fifties" bows at No. 1 with sales of 156,000 copies in the United States, giving the artist his best sales week since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking data in 1991.

The Arista album features Manilow revisiting such evergreens as "Unchained Melody" and "Love is a Many Splendored Thing." The artist's lone prior chart-topper came in July 1977 with his double concert LP "Live." His last album, "Scores: Songs From Copacabana and Harmony" (Concord), peaked at No. 47.

And of course since he's a hit again, the rags nned to tear him down. I saw an article today, calling him "Barry Mannequin" and dissecting all of the plastic surgeries he's had. Rolling Eyes

I heard him sing "Unchained Melody" on "Dancing With the Stars." At first I thought, "What a stange choice for him. How on earth is he going to reach those high notes?!" Then, when he started singing, I realized that the entire arrangement had been changed so that there were no high notes! I thought his rendition was pleasant enough, but it's not the "Unchained Melody" I know and love. I do like Barry, though, and I'm happy for him.

Anyone who can be around this long has the stuff. I've always like Barry and am happy this is going well. I haven't heard his Unchained Melody, but IMHO, no one should touch it. That's Bobby's song.

Agree. I like Barry too and am very happy for him. I think he is a fabulous musician. But it's tough to hear anyone but Bobby sing that song. I don't think it's right for Barry. Smile

The remake of Bobby Darin's "Beyond The Sea" almost reminds me of Roger Whittaker 1975 song "The Last Farewell" orchestra wise.

I love Barry but I'm a bad Barry Manilow fan.

I haven't heard any of the new album yet. Normally I get it as soon as it is released.

I loved "Mayflower" (2001) - fantastic record! The last live album was terrific too because it included 5 or 6 'new' songs.

I do grow tired of Barry constantly putting out these albums of cover versions. "Showstopppers" his tribute to broadway was the best of the lot. Of course to be fair I haven't heard the new collection yet. I hope his next release will be of new songs.

Oh! Bobby Sherman! I always get him mixed up with Peabody and Sherman. Or is that Sherman Williams? Hmmm. I always get them mixed up too. One paints and one has a Way-Back Machine. Or do they all just paint the Way-Back Machine? Hmmm. Confused
